The health of the heart and blood vessels may be more closely connected to the intestine than was long thought. Gut bacteria produce substances that contribute to a strong intestinal wall and help regulate inflammatory responses in the body. Disturbances in the microbiome are therefore increasingly being investigated in relation to cardiovascular disease.

In this video, general practitioner Dr. Van de Griendt explains how the microbiome may influence cardiovascular health and what role intestinal health plays in this.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body has difficulty regulating blood sugar levels properly. This increases the risk of damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys and feet, among other things.

In type 2 diabetes, inflammatory reactions and insulin resistance play an important role. Research shows that the microbiome of people with diabetes differs from that of healthy individuals. As a result, interest in the role of the microbiome in the development and progression of diabetes is growing.

Obesity

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects the processing of information in the brain. Characteristic are differences in social interaction, communication and behavior.

Research shows that abnormalities in the microbiome are more often found in people with autism. In addition, there are indications that intestinal complaints and increased permeability of the intestinal wall are more common. As a result, more and more research is being done into the possible role of the microbiome in autism.

Metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of risk factors, including obesity (especially around the abdomen), elevated blood sugar levels, high blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol levels.

A relationship with the microbiome has been found for all these factors. In addition, increased inflammatory activity in the body plays an important role. Research suggests that the microbiome influences these processes and therefore possibly also metabolic syndrome.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension) means that the blood flows through the blood vessels with increased pressure. High blood pressure is when the systolic pressure is 140 mmHg or higher and/or the diastolic pressure is 90 mmHg or higher.

Research shows that the composition and diversity of the microbiome in people with high blood pressure differs from that of healthy individuals. In addition, there are indications that changes in the microbiome can affect blood pressure. Several studies with probiotics show that supporting the microbiome may contribute to a reduction in blood pressure.

Cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular diseases are diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Well-known examples are a heart attack, stroke, intermittent claudication and heart cramps.

More and more research indicates that the microbiome is involved in processes that play a role in the development of cardiovascular disease. In particular, inflammatory reactions in the blood vessels and the development of arteriosclerosis seem to be partly influenced by the microbiome.

Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis, also known as arteriosclerosis, is a condition in which the blood vessels narrow due to the accumulation of fats and inflammatory cells in the artery wall. This can reduce blood flow to organs and tissues.

Research shows that inflammatory responses involved in the development of atherosclerosis can be influenced by the microbiome. That is why the possible role of intestinal health in the development and course of this condition is increasingly being examined.
