Discover how microbiome therapy works

Microbiome therapy consists of three steps: an analysis, a consultation with a practitioner and – if appropriate – a personalized prescription. Microbiome Center supports practitioners in this process, but does not treat itself. Don't have a practitioner who works with Microbiome Center yet? We help you connect to an affiliated practitioner.

Good to know

If you already have a healthcare practitioner who works with Microbiome Center, you don't need to request an analysis or treatment yourself. Your practitioner will arrange everything with you. In that case, please see the page If you already have a participating healthcare practitioner.

A home test that provides insight into how your microbiome functions. The analysis forms the basis for any treatment, but can also be requested completely separately if you only want insight into your microbiome.

How the test works

  1. You will receive a small home kit with clear instructions.
  2. You take a small sample at home and send it to the laboratory via the enclosed return envelope.
  3. There, the microbiome in your stool is extensively analyzed.

What you'll receive

Within two weeks, you'll receive a personalized report showing:

  • which bacteria are present in your gut,
how your gut microbiome compares to a healthy balance,
and where there may be potential imbalances or vulnerabilities.

If you're working with a healthcare practitioner, they will also receive the report so you can review the results together.

Consultation with an affiliated practitioner

Who is the practitioner?

Consultations are provided by independent doctors/practitioners who work with the Microbiome Center platform. Microbiome Center does not treat itself, but links you to a suitable practitioner.

What happens in the consultation?

A practitioner from the Microbiome Center network discusses with you:

  • your symptoms and medical background
  • The result of the analysis
  • the possible causes of your symptoms
  • whether microbiome therapy suits your situation

Based on this, you will determine together which follow-up steps are appropriate.

How do I get matched with a practitioner?

If you opt for a process including consultation during your application, Microbiome Center will link you to a suitable practitioner from the network. This includes looking at availability, expertise and your situation. The practitioner will then contact you to schedule an appointment.

Consultation fees

If you opt for a process including a consultation, the consultation costs are part of your order. If you work directly with a practitioner, consultation costs are usually charged by the practitioner himself.

Personalized microbiome therapy

If therapy proves appropriate, your practitioner will prescribe a prescription.

How the treatment is composed

The treatment is prepared exclusively on prescription and is:

  • based on your analysis, complaints and medical background,
  • assessed by your practitioner,
  • prepared by a licensed pharmacist according to pharmaceutical guidelines,
  • tailored to your personal situation.

Aftercare and guidance

  • You will receive your personal microbiome therapy at home, along with clear instructions for use.
  • During follow-up consultations, you and your practitioner discuss how the treatment is going.
  • If necessary, the practitioner can evaluate the treatment and give additional advice.

What microbiome therapy can do for many people

Support for inflammatory complaints

A disturbed microbiome can play a role in long-term inflammation. Targeted therapy can help to restore that balance.

Better digestion

In case of complaints such as abdominal pain or bloating, analysis can provide insight. Together you look at what your microbiome needs.

More energy & less fatigue

Your microbiome affects the absorption of nutrients. Restoring balance can contribute to more energy.

Are the costs of Microbiome Center reimbursed?

Usually not. In some cases, (part of) the costs are reimbursed from a supplementary health insurance. This differs per health insurer and policy.

Keep in mind:

  • Many supplementary insurance policies offer reimbursement for certain alternative or complementary treatment methods.
  • The amount of the reimbursement differs per policy.
  • Supervision by a registered doctor is often a condition.
  • Medicines and supplements are usually not reimbursed.

Do you have a suitable supplementary insurance and has your reimbursement budget not yet been used? Then it is possible that costs for a consultation and a stool analysis will be (partially) reimbursed. Medicine costs are usually not included.

Do you want to know what you are entitled to? Then contact your health insurer. Keep your policy number at hand so that they can check which reimbursement applies to your situation.

In some cases, you may be able to declare non-reimbursed healthcare costs incurred on the advice of a registered doctor on your tax return. Ask your practitioner or tax advisor about this.

Can I request a microbiome test from abroad?

Yes, that is possible. We can ship the test kit to most countries. Any additional shipping costs are at your own expense.

Sending the sample back to the laboratory is different for each country. In the manual that you receive with the test kit, you can read exactly which steps to follow.

For shipments from abroad, the following usually applies:

  • Pack the sample according to the instructions provided.
  • Send the sample to the specified laboratory address as soon as possible.
  • Use an express service, such as DHL or UPS.
  • The return shipping costs are at your own expense.

Are you unsure whether shipping from your country is possible? Please feel free to contact us.
