48: New ingredient for patients with fatigue and impaired resilience
Synbio® – a two-strain probiotic for fatigue, digestive comfort, and more
We recently added a new building block, Synbio®, consisting of two probiotic strains, L. rhamnosus IMC501 and L. paracasei IMC502.
Fatigue reduction
One of the most intriguing indications for this two-strain probiotic is prevention of fatigue. In a pilot RCT with airline flight crew – a group under considerable physical and circadian stress – participants receiving Synbio® showed a larger reduction in fatigue than the placebo group. A larger RCT in athletes found a similar pattern: greater reduction in tiredness frequency in the probiotic group versus placebo (2). These two studies looked at different types of fatigue – clinical and exercise-induced – yet both point in the same direction, suggesting a broader effect on fatigue regardless of cause. Interestingly, both trials also reported fewer common colds in the probiotic group (1,2), hinting that these strains may help support the body under physically demanding conditions.
Digestive comfort, histamine reduction, and other indications
In addition, this set of probiotic strains is also well-supported by evidence for digestive comfort. A meta-analysis of clinical trials found substantial effect on constipation and on maintaining intestinal regularity (3), while several additional clinical studies report reductions in bloating (2,4,5). Moreover, a clinical study in elderly showed that supplementation led to lower histamine levels (6). Other areas with supporting evidence include e.g. inhibiting pathogens (including common skin pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (7,8)) among others.
