41: New Strain: Lacticaseibacillus paracasei Lpc-37

Research on Lacticaseibacillus paracasei Lpc-37 and its clinical Applications

Lacticaseibacillus paracasei Lpc-37 was isolated from a dairy product several decades ago and has since been extensively studied in both preclinical and clinical trials. These studies have investigated the strain either in isolation or in combination with other probiotic strains.

One relatively underexplored health aspect in scientific research where this strain has been evaluated is sleep quality. Two randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) examining Lpc-37 as a monostrain showed a positive effect on sleep quality (1,2). These studies were conducted among students preparing for an exam and healthy adults. In both populations, a reduction in sleep disturbances was observed compared to the placebo group. Additionally, the same studies evaluated the effect on stress, with the first study (1) finding no significant differences, while the second study (2) reported a positive effect.

A second notable indication that has been investigated is autism, where Lpc-37 was administered as part of a formulation containing multiple probiotic strains and a prebiotic (3). Although this pilot study has limitations (including a small number of participants and a relatively high dropout rate), its findings are relevant. An improvement was observed on a scale quantifying the severity of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms. This is particularly significant, as interventions showing such an effect are rare. The study supports the concept that microbiome-targeted interventions may play a role in autism, aligning with recent research on the gut microbiome’s role in autism, including a multi-cohort study published in Scientific Reports (4). To further explore these findings, we are organizing a webinar on this topic, where we will also discuss case studies from clinical practice. This thematic webinar on autism will take place on March 17 (English) and April 1 (German) from 19:30-21:00 CET.

Furthermore, a large-scale RCT with Lpc-37 as a monostrain demonstrated a positive effect on the prevention of diarrhea and fever (5), as well as on various other indications such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea, cognitive functions, and pathogens.
