We previously discussed SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), a relatively unknown phenomenon for many, but one that is very common in practice. Gastrointestinal (and systemic) complaints caused by an increased number of atypical bacteria in the small intestine (1,2). Patients complain of bloating and abdominal pain, which worsens after eating. They may also experience persistent belching and flatulence, diarrhea or constipation, impaired fat absorption, vitamin deficiencies (including B12), a disrupted gut barrier, and altered immune activity (2).
The advice to take extra fiber for chronic abdominal complaints worsens the symptoms in SIBO by exacerbating bacterial overgrowth. Also, many classic probiotic strains often have an adverse effect.
What can you do for SIBO?
Due to the personalized nature of MiBlend, it is possible to specifically target those probiotics that studies show can reduce SIBO symptoms (3). Clinical research is available for various MiBlend strains, demonstrating a good effect in treating SIBO. How you, as a practitioner, can use this is simple: when choosing the SIBO variant in the prescription (in the prescription selection box for 1 or 2 months), the patient will receive a special MiBlend with a thermos flask and a tailored usage instruction to enhance effectiveness in the small intestine.
SIBO Treatment Experiences
Ultimately, it’s all about practice, so we requested the first experiences. We immediately encountered many positive patient stories. One notable case is a woman who, despite a healthy lifestyle, continued to suffer from fatigue, constipation, and skin issues. Only after SIBO treatment did she start improving. More information can be found in the attached case description.
